Our story

The journey behind eigenstudio

We're building the next generation of engineering intelligence by combining scientific reasoning, domain expertise, and AI. Our mission is to make Physics AI accessible, explainable, and impactful across research and industry.

The origins of eigenstudio can be traced back to a question that emerged long before the company itself was incorporated. Why does a nation capable of designing nuclear reactors, launching satellites, developing advanced defence systems, and producing world-class engineers continue to depend on foreign engineering simulation software for some of its most critical technological decisions?

The story dates back to 2010. Following their graduation from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur in 2010, Abhinav Gupta joined the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), while Kamal Shanker Patel joined Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). Working within two of India’s most important strategic sectors exposed them to a fundamental gap in the country’s engineering ecosystem: India had the talent and capability to build nuclear reactors but did not have its own globally competitive engineering simulation software. In organisations such as NPCIL, this dependence became even more critical when sanctions, licensing restrictions, and limited access to foreign software could directly affect engineering and research workflows. That realisation led to a simple question: why not build our own?

But building advanced simulation software requires much more than software development. It demands deep expertise in computational mechanics, numerical methods, applied mathematics, and scientific computing. That understanding shaped the next phase of the journey. Abhinav and Kamal moved into doctoral research in Computational Mechanics, spending years developing numerical algorithms, publishing research, and building the scientific depth required to eventually create indigenous computational technologies.

Academic research can create powerful ideas, but its real impact comes when those ideas move beyond papers and laboratories into technologies that industry can actually use. That belief became an important part of Avkalan Labs’ (incorporation in 2023) journey - creating a bridge between advanced computational research and real engineering problems.

I, Bishal, followed the same vision during my PhD, where my work focused on additive manufacturing and computational engineering. During this period, I worked closely with Avkalan Labs on research-driven engineering problems, which brought my academic work closer to industrial applications.

After nearly two years of working across research and industrial problems, we reached a point where we felt the scientific foundation was strong enough to take the next step: build our own engineering software. At the same time, India was seeing a growing push toward deep-tech entrepreneurship, indigenous technology, and startup-led innovation. That momentum reinforced what we had already understood through years of research and industry exposure - India needed its own advanced engineering simulation platform.

This led to the incorporation of eigenstudio, with Bishal and Kamal onboarded as Directors, to build a dedicated product organisation focused on engineering simulation software. We began developing eigenspacedesign as eigenstudio’s multiphysics simulation platform. This also marked a clear transition from research-led exploration to in-house product development, with the proprietary solvers powering eigenspacedesign being developed entirely within eigenstudio.
